Broad City’s Abbi and Ilana are the ultimate stoner dream team

First off, I’m sorry about the irregular posting at the moment. I have recently bitten off more than I can chew from the proverbial Peperami of life. The result is precious little time for my beloved Netflix. I must, and will try harder.

Today I need to take a moment to gush over Broad City. I’m probably preaching to the choir at this point, but Broad City is fucking hilarious and perfect in every way. If you’re not yet familiar, my lazy way of describing it is like Girls, but with people you might actually like.

This is not to dis Girls. I actually love Girls. It’s an original, insightful look at the humiliation and pain of youth. But they are all awful people. They can barely stand themselves or each other. I would straight up avoid them all IRL. Also, in a recent episode a bunch of them willingly took two cabs when they could have easily fitted in one. I’m pretty sure that no one under the age of 30 has ever done that.

The main thing I can’t relate to (thank fuck) is spending my 20’s hanging out with people who I don’t love. In stark contrast Broad City’s Abbi and Ilana love the crap out of each other. They love with my favorite kind of love: the love between friends who find each other singularly hilarious and laugh together in the face of the world. I so badly want to be in their gang.

I also want to be in their NYC. It’s always sunny. It’s full of ridiculous obstacles and fun-loving characters, like any good adventure playground, or Super Mario. It takes Abbi and Ilana ages to get from A to B, always with hilarious consequences. This suits them fine, as they are not at all preoccupied with the usual crap females are meant to care about, but happy to hang out, get high, and hopefully get a good story out of whatever happens to happen. Sure, being young and broke in the city comes with it’s share of shitty jobs, shitty sex and shitty apartments, but when you have the perfect partner in crime this matters not.

What is really refreshing about Broad City is that it shows female friendship for how hilarious and awesome it can be. In so many other shows women are presented as emotional creatures, constantly analyzing their own and each other’s personal dramas. Abbi and Ilana don’t waste much time considering if they can really have casual sex, where their career is going, or if they can truly call themselves an artist. They aren’t tied up in insecurities about each other, men, and life’s general direction. They are all about making the best of the here and now.

I’m truly grateful to the real life dream team Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer for making brilliant lady stoner comedy. It's a genre I love, but too often its pure bro territory. You once had to be Seth Rogan to have no work ethic and the attention span of a bouncy ball. A show like Broad City has been a long time coming, because deep down stoner comedies have always really been about friendship. Think about it. Cheech and Chong. Harold and Kumar. SpongeBob and Patrick. Abbi and Ilana.

Stoner comedy is all about having a buddy so fun that anything life throws at you just becomes a hilarious adventure. Stoner buddies have each others back, and let their soul mates be the weirdos they are. With this in mind, Abbi and Ilana are undoubtably the greatest stoner team of all time.
